August 2009, Khibiny mountains, Cola Peninsula, Russia. I went from Akademicheskoye Lake up to plateau and then moved to the Kukisvumchorr Mountain and Unnamed Pass. Clouds flew very fast and low from the early morning. After lifting to to the top I saw a valley full of white clouds. They literally boiled in this cirque. Clouds freely floated inside via only one possible entry, whereas insurmountable cliff waited them ahead. The Kirovsk mine was been seen on the horizon. And when amazing cloud transformations began in its area I got my camera with telephoto lens and started to shoot. I name this photograph “Octopus”. Giant squid stretched his tentacles from white deep and tried to reach tiny plant’s buildings and stacks. In my childhood I was impressed by pictures from a nature book which illustrated myths about huge octopuses attacking and enmeshing by their tentacles whole ships. I always feel a subtle spirit of these pictures looking at this photograph.
July 2010, Dzembronya village, Carpathian mountains, Ukraine. That morning began ordinary. Talks with yourself to nasty beeps of alarm, dormant on porch dog Dick, tea, one hour way to shooting spot and fog. All as usual. It was the same every day. But differences occurred half an hour before sunrise. Fog was taken away unusually early. Rural houses and neighboring hills was started to show up through the milky shroud. The sun raised and all around blazed by bright-orange and then soft-pink colors. On the left of me so far invisible hill started to come to light. As if it come to the surface from foggy deep. I stayed on the height but a little island from trees stood my vision. I immediately snatched my tripod, at full speed ran down near the trees and flew on the height again. “Not be late!” I hardly could recover my breath after such spurt. The heart beat in the chest extended to frequent beats in the temples. After ten minutes pink color immediately turned into grey and after five minutes more the hill hid in the foggy sea again. “Good morning”. I started from suddenness. Herdsman, which I already met some days ago, came to me. “Did you see my horses?”, – herdsman asked. “No”, – I answered. Herdsman gave a deep sigh and silently went further along the ridge in search of his horses. Whereas I moved to opposite side in search of new shots. I think that morning we were lucky and we found what we looked for.
June 2010. Huangshan Mountains, Monkey Gazing the Sea of Clouds Lookout, China.
July 2010, Dzembronya village, Carpathian mountains, Ukraine. When I was child I often drew the sun. You know, with eyes, smile and beams every which way. Then I dropped this thing and forgot how to do this. After a many years, when I started making landscape photographs, I begin to do this again. Looking at the sun, beams and make photographs about all of these. But nowadays I also need skills. Nature doesn’t like throw away its gems. It is very busy customer. You will be brought to the right place in the strictly specified time. It will be done very delicately. You will sincerely believe that you are here of you own free will. Then you will be shown something that carry you away. But you can’t simply stay and open wide your mouth. If you are selected, you have to manage in 5-10 minutes and make why you are here – photographs. And when all will disappear, you will be let to go freely. But only if you don’t have other orders for today.
